Footprints In The Sand

In the presence of eternity,
What are we but footprints in the sand?
So solid in that moment,
Yet washed away by the waves of time.
We are haunted by a past
We cannot return to,
So we soldier on forward,
Onward and onwards,
Lest the demons of our memories
Catch up to us.
We wander towards an unknown horizon,
Not knowing whether it leads to dawn or dusk.
The sky above remains still, unchanging,
Witness to our fleeting steps,
Like those of thousands before us.
Then it all comes to an end.
Suddenly, without sense.
Without warning.
One moment, you’re with your best friend,
The next, waving your final goodbyes.
It’s all a very long time ago,
And none of it is ever coming back.
Yet still, we walk.
Still, we hope.
Still, we love.
For the tide may wash away our footprints,
But in this moment, we are infinite.
In this moment, we matter.
