The Mirror Lies

When you look in the mirror, the image that you see
Isn't always as truthful as you want it to be.
Elusive and misleading, the mirror can only show
How the mind in front perceives an image, that's all you'll know.

A fleeting, ephemeral image, that only runs skin-deep
That can be skewed to either extreme, every time you take a peep
It doesn't show your moments as they play out in time
It doesn't define the depth of your sorrow, or the joy of your prime.

It's so easy to believe it, to be led astray
To forget your troubles, to make them go away
To concentrate into your image the way you want to appear
And mask your greatest insecurities and every fear.

The mirror amplifies every transient emotion
And evokes intense storms, as deep as the ocean
Such as Mania unlimited or Grief unending
Because in a moment, we're all just pretending

Do not let it consume you, for the better or for the worse
Do not fall into its influence, break the curse
That steadfast mirror on the wall
Isn't the fairest of them all.
